PokerStars on FanDuel has overhauled its Nightly Stars tournament series, doubling starting stacks, raising guarantees and extending late registration — and a further round of changes to the same tournaments landed in mid-August. For US players in the regulated market, it is one of the more meaningful structural improvements to a daily tournament schedule in recent memory.
The core changes are straightforward:
- Starting stacks doubled from 5,000 to 10,000 chips
- Guarantees raised to $25,000 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and $22,500 on other nights
- Late registration extended to the 400/800 level
- New blind levels added to produce more deep-stacked play in the early stages
The upgrades went live on July 27, with additional adjustments to guarantees and starting chips announced on August 18.
Why Doubling the Starting Stack Actually Matters
It is easy to dismiss a starting stack increase as cosmetic — after all, doubling everyone's chips changes nothing if the blinds double too. But that is not what happened here. The blind structure was reworked with additional levels rather than scaled proportionally, which means players genuinely start deeper relative to the blinds and stay deeper for longer.
The practical difference is large. A 5,000-chip start against a typical opening blind level might give you 50 big blinds. A 10,000-chip start with a reworked ladder gives you 100 big blinds and a slower descent toward short-stack territory.
That changes what kind of tournament you are playing. At 100 big blinds, postflop skill is the dominant source of edge: you can three-bet and play, you can float and take a pot away on a later street, you can build multi-street plans. At 30 big blinds, you are largely executing a shove-fold chart. Both are legitimate games, but the deeper version rewards study and skill more consistently — and, importantly, it is more enjoyable for the recreational players who fund the ecosystem.

Late Registration to 400/800
Extending late registration to the 400/800 level does two things simultaneously.
For the operator, it increases entries. Players who log in after dinner can still register, and the guarantee is easier to cover. For players, it creates a strategic choice: register on time and play a deep-stack tournament from level one, or register late with a shorter relative stack and fewer decisions to survive.
Neither is strictly correct. Late registration reduces variance in one sense — fewer opportunities to bust before the money — while increasing it in another, since you are working with less fold equity. The right answer depends on your edge relative to the field. A strong player generally wants more decisions, which argues for registering early. A player with limited time and a modest edge may prefer the compressed version.
The Competitive Context
These changes did not happen in a vacuum. FanDuel Poker, powered by PokerStars, has been positioning itself aggressively in the US regulated market, and traffic data shows the strategy working — PokerStars on FanDuel Ontario recorded 24.9% cash game growth in the most recent monthly traffic report, the strongest figure among all tracked networks.
The US regulated online poker market remains fragmented across nine states with legalisation on the books and six with active licensed rooms — Nevada, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia. Maine became the ninth state to legalise in January 2026, and Connecticut, Rhode Island and Maine have laws in place without launched operators. Virginia legislation could add a tenth, though the framework points to July 2027 as the earliest realistic launch.
In a market that fragmented, liquidity is scarce and every operator is competing for the same relatively small pool of players in each state. Improving tournament structures is one of the few genuine differentiators available. You cannot magic up more players, but you can make the tournaments you run more attractive than the ones next door.

Guarantees as a Signal
Raising guarantees to $25,000 on the busiest nights and $22,500 otherwise is a calculated risk. A guarantee is a promise; if entries fall short, the operator covers the difference from its own funds — an overlay that costs money but generates goodwill and, usually, more entries next time.
Operators only raise guarantees when they are confident in their traffic trajectory. The move is therefore a reasonably reliable signal that PokerStars on FanDuel expects continued growth in its player base. It also creates a genuine value opportunity for players: whenever a guarantee is not met, the overlay is free equity distributed among the field.
For players hunting overlays, the practical approach is to track guarantee-versus-entry patterns over several weeks and identify which nights consistently run short. Those are the highest-EV events on any schedule.
What This Means for Players
Deeper structures reward preparation. If your tournament game is built around shove-fold charts, a 100-big-blind start will expose gaps. The August 18 adjustments suggest PokerStars on FanDuel is treating its tournament structures as a live product rather than a fixed schedule — testing, measuring and iterating. That is unusual in online poker, where lobbies have historically been set and forgotten for years at a time.
For players in the six live US markets, it is a welcome development. Structural improvements compound: better tournaments attract more recreational players, more recreational players make the games better, and better games attract more volume. It is the only virtuous cycle available to an operator in a ring-fenced market.
