Deep-stack poker is quietly coming back to online tournament schedules. WPT Global's new weekly Asia Super High Roller Championship starts players with 200 big blinds and 15-minute levels. Triton's high-roller events routinely run deep. Even the WSOP Online schedule has leaned toward slower early structures than the hyper-turbos that dominated the last few years.
For anyone who learned tournament poker in the 30-to-50 big blind world that online turbos created, 200bb is a genuinely different game. Not harder, exactly — but different enough that transferring your usual approach unchanged will cost you money.
Here is what actually changes.
Hand Values Invert
The most important shift is that implied odds start to dominate immediate equity.
At 30 big blinds, the value of a hand is close to its raw showdown strength. A-J offsuit is a strong holding because it beats a lot of the hands your opponent will get all-in with, and there are not enough streets left for anyone to outplay you.
At 200 big blinds, that logic breaks down. A-J offsuit becomes a genuine liability in big pots — the hands that want to play a 200bb stack for stacks against you are A-K, A-Q and sets, all of which crush you. Meanwhile suited connectors and small pocket pairs gain enormous value, because when they hit, they hit disguised, and there is enough money behind to get paid.
The rule of thumb for small pairs is roughly 15-to-1 implied odds — you need the effective stacks to be about 15 times the amount you are calling to profitably set-mine. At 30bb that is rarely satisfied. At 200bb it almost always is.

Position Becomes Worth More
Position is always valuable. At 200 big blinds it becomes decisive.
The reason is compounding. Positional advantage pays out once per street. In a 30bb pot there might be one or two streets of meaningful post-flop play before someone is all in. In a 200bb pot there are three full streets, and the player acting last has more information on every one of them.
The practical consequence is that your opening ranges should tighten from early position and widen from late position more sharply than at shorter stacks. A hand like K-J offsuit that is a marginal open under the gun at 40bb becomes a clear fold at 200bb — you will be playing three streets out of position against ranges that dominate you.
Conversely, hands you might discard at 40bb from the button — suited gappers, small suited aces — become profitable opens at 200bb, because their post-flop playability in position is worth more than their raw preflop equity.
Pot Control Stops Being Optional
At 30 big blinds, "pot control" is largely theoretical: the pot is going to get big whether you like it or not.
At 200 big blinds, the size of the pot on the river is something you actively construct across three streets, and getting it wrong is expensive. The classic error is betting three streets with top pair, good kicker on a coordinated board, building a pot large enough that only better hands can call your river bet.
The discipline that separates good deep-stack players from good short-stack players is planning the hand before the flop is dealt. Before you call a raise with a medium-strength holding at 200bb, know what you intend to do on each street and what board textures make you fold. If the answer is "I'll see what happens," you are going to end up putting 200 big blinds in with one pair.
The corollary is that bluffs get more expensive and more effective. A three-street bluff at 200bb requires committing a huge stack, but it also puts a huge stack of pressure on an opponent whose entire tournament is at risk. Three-Betting Changes Shape
Short-stacked, three-betting is largely a shove-or-fold proposition and the sizing is dictated by the stack.
Deep-stacked, three-bet sizing becomes a strategic choice. The standard adjustment is larger three-bets in position and much larger out of position, precisely because you want to reduce the stack-to-pot ratio when you will be at a positional disadvantage for three streets.
A useful heuristic: out of position at 200bb, three-bet to roughly four times the open. In position, three times is usually sufficient. The difference is not arbitrary — it is compensating for the positional disadvantage by shrinking the number of decisions you will have to make blind.
Four-betting also becomes a real part of the game rather than a rarity, and four-bet ranges deep should be more polarised than they are short. At 200bb, a four-bet with A-Q is frequently worse than a call, because you fold out everything you beat and get called by everything that beats you.
The Structure Matters as Much as the Stack
One caveat worth flagging: 200 big blinds with fast levels is not the same as 200 big blinds with slow levels.
The WPT Global event pairs 200bb starts with 15-minute levels, which means the effective stack shrinks quickly. You get a genuinely deep phase for the first hour or two, then a rapid transition into medium-stack and eventually short-stack play.
That structure rewards players who can shift gears. The mistake is to keep playing deep-stack poker — speculative calls, set-mining, multi-street plans — after the structure has taken the deep-stack conditions away. When the average stack drops below about 40 big blinds, small pairs stop being set-mining hands and start being shoving hands, and the entire hand-value hierarchy inverts back.

What This Means for Players
Study cash-game material for the deep phase. Deep-stack tournament play at 200bb is closer to a 100bb cash game than to a 40bb tournament. If you have only ever studied tournament content, the deep phase is where your knowledge is thinnest — and cash-game training material covers it far better.
Tighten from early position, widen from the button. The positional spread in your opening ranges should be wider at 200bb than at any other stack depth. Most players do not adjust enough in either direction.
Plan the whole hand before you call. The single biggest leak at deep stacks is entering pots with medium-strength hands and no plan. Decide before the flop what you are doing on each street and which cards make you stop.
Respect big bets more. At 200bb, an opponent who commits a large stack over multiple streets almost always has it. The bluff-to-value ratio that makes sense at 30bb does not hold when a bluff costs somebody their entire tournament. Deep-stack fields are, on average, more honest with large sizings than short-stack fields.
Don't overplay one pair. This is the summary of everything above. One pair is a good hand at 30 big blinds and a mediocre one at 200. If your stack is going in with top pair on a coordinated board, you are usually beaten.
