What Is Expected Value (EV) in Poker?

Expected value is the average amount of money you expect to win or lose on a specific decision if you could repeat it thousands of times. Every bet, call, raise, and fold in poker has an EV attached to it. Winning players make decisions that are positive EV (+EV) more often than negative EV (-EV). Losing players do the opposite.

EV does not predict what will happen on any single hand. You can make a perfect +EV call and still lose. You can make a terrible -EV bluff and still win. But over a large sample of hands, the math converges. Players who consistently choose +EV actions build their bankrolls. Players who consistently choose -EV actions drain theirs.

Understanding EV is the single most important step in moving from recreational poker to serious, profitable play. It is the foundation of every poker strategy concept worth studying.

The EV Formula

The basic formula for expected value is:

EV = (Probability of Winning x Amount Won) - (Probability of Losing x Amount Lost)

This formula works for any poker decision where you can estimate your chance of winning and the money at stake. The key is plugging in realistic numbers. Your equity estimate does not need to be perfect — it needs to be close enough to guide correct decisions.

Worked Example 1: A River Bluff

You are on the river in a $1/$2 No-Limit Hold'em cash game. The pot is $100. You missed your draw and hold a worthless hand. You decide to bluff $75.

Based on your read of the villain — a tight-passive player who folds to river aggression roughly 55% of the time — you estimate a 55% chance your bluff succeeds.

  • If villain calls (45% of the time): you lose your $75 bet.

EV = (0.55 x $100) - (0.45 x $75) = $55.00 - $33.75 = +$21.25

This bluff is +EV. Every time you fire this bluff in this exact situation, you profit $21.25 on average. Over 100 identical spots, you would expect to net roughly $2,125. The bluff does not need to work every time. It needs to work often enough to offset the times it fails.

Notice how the sizing matters. If you bet $100 instead of $75, the math shifts: EV = (0.55 x $100) - (0.45 x $100) = $55 - $45 = +$10. A larger bet with the same fold frequency is still profitable, but less so. Efficient bluff sizing is a direct application of EV thinking.

Worked Example 2: Calling a Shove

Now consider a different spot. The villain shoves $50 into a pot of $80. You need to call $50 to win a total pot of $130 (the $80 already in the middle plus villain's $50). You hold a flush draw and estimate your equity at 35%.

  • If you win (35% of the time): you collect $130.
  • If you lose (65% of the time): you lose your $50 call.

EV = (0.35 x $130) - (0.65 x $50) = $45.50 - $32.50 = +$13.00

This call is +EV by $13. You should call. Even though you will lose this hand nearly two out of three times, the times you win pay enough to make up the difference. Compare this to the pot odds: you need to risk $50 to win $130, so you need 50/180 = 27.8% equity to break even. Your 35% equity clears that threshold. EV math and pot odds are two sides of the same coin.

Long-Run Thinking

The hardest part of EV is accepting that individual results are noise. You will make a +EV call and lose. You will fold a -EV spot and watch the board run out perfectly for you. Neither outcome means you made the wrong decision.

Professional poker players track their results over tens of thousands of hands. A sample of 500 hands tells you almost nothing about your true win rate. At 10,000 hands, the picture starts to clarify. At 50,000 or more, your results begin to converge toward your actual EV. This is why bankroll management exists — it gives you enough runway to survive the short-term variance while the long-term math plays out in your favor.

Think of EV like an insurance company. An insurer does not know which house will burn down this year. But they know that across 100,000 policies, they will pay out less than they collect in premiums. Each +EV decision you make is one more policy in your portfolio.
