Pot-limit Omaha's biggest dedicated European festival is back. The Diamond Poker Series PLO Grand Slam runs in Tallinn from September 15-22, 2026, with €2.5 million guaranteed — headlined by two events carrying €1 million guarantees each.
For a tournament series built entirely around a single non-hold'em variant, that is an extraordinary number, and it says something about where the live tournament market has drifted over the past five years.
The schedule
Two events anchor the week:
- €5,200 5k Million — September 17-20, €1,000,000 guaranteed
- €10,400 PLO Championship — September 20-22, €1,000,000 guaranteed
Around them sits a schedule that includes a €15,300 High Roller, a €15,300 Quatro Bounty, and a range of four-, five- and six-card Omaha variants for players who want something beyond standard PLO.
The entry route for most players is the Stage Tournaments — two events at €1,100 each, running Tuesday September 15 and Wednesday September 16. Finish in the top 20% of a Stage and your stack advances directly into 5k Million Day 1A on Thursday. It is a progressive-stack qualifier rather than a conventional satellite, meaning you carry your accumulated chips forward rather than receiving a standard starting stack.
That structure is worth understanding. A conventional satellite converts a win into a flat seat. A progressive-stack qualifier converts a big win into a big starting stack in the target event. The strategic implication is significant: unlike a normal satellite, where chips above the seat threshold are worthless, here accumulation genuinely matters. The players
Tom-Aksel Bedell, Imad Derwiche and Hossein Ensan are among the names in Tallinn. Bedell is chasing a second PLO Grand Slam title. Ensan, the 2019 WSOP Main Event champion, has become a regular at the series.
The Grand Slam has built a following among European PLO specialists partly because there is nowhere else quite like it. Most festivals treat Omaha as a side event — a €1,000 PLO tournament sandwiched between hold'em Main Event flights. The Diamond Poker Series inverted that, and the response has been strong enough to sustain multiple editions a year, including a stop at Arena Casino Tirana in April with over €2 million guaranteed.
Why PLO keeps growing
Pot-limit Omaha's rise is the clearest structural trend in tournament poker over the last decade, and the reasons are worth spelling out.
Variance attracts recreational money. Four hole cards mean equities run closer together. A hand that is a 4-to-1 favourite in hold'em is frequently a 55/45 in PLO. That compression means weaker players lose more slowly and win more often in the short run, which keeps them in the game — exactly the dynamic a healthy ecosystem needs.
Solvers have made less progress. Hold'em solver technology is mature; ranges for most common spots are essentially settled knowledge. PLO's game tree is vastly larger — the number of possible starting hands alone is over 16,000 compared to hold'em's 169 — and solutions are correspondingly less complete and harder to memorise. The practical result is that skill edges in PLO remain wider than in equivalent hold'em games.
The high-stakes world moved first. Triton's schedules now include multiple PLO events, with a $100,000 PLO Main Event alongside the no-limit flagship. Joao Simao won this year's WSOP $50,000 PLO event for $1,368,700 before taking the Triton Invitational. Ben Tollerene's first Triton Main Event title came in PLO. What this means for players
PLO is the best value study investment in poker right now. The single biggest leak is overvaluing hold'em hands. Aces are strong in PLO. They are not the monster they are in hold'em, and playing them as though they are is the most expensive habit crossovers bring with them. Similarly, top pair is close to worthless in a four-card game where opponents routinely hold wraps and flush draws. Equity distribution is the core concept. In hold'em you think about whether you are ahead. In PLO you think about how your equity is distributed across possible runouts — whether you are a made hand facing draws, a draw with redraws, or a hand with nut potential. Variance demands a bigger bankroll. The same equity compression that makes PLO attractive to recreational players makes it brutal on a thin bankroll. €2.5 million guaranteed on a single variant, in a Baltic capital, over eight days. A decade ago that would have seemed implausible. Today it is a fixture on the European calendar with a returning field of specialists and a qualifying structure designed to bring new players in cheaply.
