Daniel Negreanu went out in 99th place at the WSOP Super Circuit Canada Main Event on Tuesday, and the manner of his exit is the sort of thing that will be replayed on poker social media for years: his opponent, Chance Kornuth, called for the precise river card he needed, and the dealer produced it.
The hand ended Negreanu's bid for his first WSOP Circuit ring since 2006 in Tunica, Mississippi — a twenty-year gap that has become one of the odder footnotes in the career of a player with seven bracelets, an eighth won just this summer, and more than $60 million in tournament earnings.
The Hand That Ended It
Negreanu came into Day 4 with one of the shorter stacks in the field, around 14 big blinds, and had chipped up early in the session. Then came the confrontation with Kornuth.
With 99 players remaining and the big blind at 25,000, Negreanu opened to 50,000 from the hijack holding pocket tens. Kornuth, sitting in the cutoff with ace-king offsuit, three-bet to 140,000. Negreanu shoved for 725,000, and Kornuth called. It was the classic race — a coin flip that, in this spot, was worth a serious run at the CA$1,500,000 first-place prize.
The flop and turn came 5♥ 6♠ 5♠ 3♣. Clean. Negreanu was one card away from a stack that would have made him a genuine contender. Kornuth had six outs — three aces, three kings — and asked the dealer, out loud, for the ace of diamonds.
It came.
Negreanu collected $14,500 for 99th and, to his credit, high-fived Kornuth on the way out. There is a certain symmetry to it: on Day 3, Negreanu had survived the identical race with the hands reversed, doubling with ace-king against pocket tens. Variance collects its debts.

The tournament itself deserves more attention than the highlight reel suggests. The CA$5,000 WSOP Super Circuit Main Event at Playground, roughly 20 minutes outside Montreal, drew 2,844 entries and built a prize pool of CA$13,042,800 — approximately $9.46 million USD.
That is a comprehensive demolition of the CA$10 million guarantee the WSOP attached to the event, and it matters for reasons beyond the headline number. The Super Circuit format was an experiment: take the Circuit brand, which normally lives in $300-to-$1,700 territory at regional casinos, and stack a genuinely large-field, mid-five-figure-prize-pool Main Event on top of it. Overshooting a CA$10 million guarantee by 30% in a debut year is the kind of result that gets a stop renewed and copied. Who Was Left
The field that survived to Day 4 was heavy with names. Michael Mizrachi — Hall of Famer, eight-time bracelet winner, 2025 WSOP Main Event champion, more than $30 million in career earnings — advanced. So did Rayan Chamas, the online crusher who plays as "beriuzy." Rami Hammoud, a Canadian who made the final table of the 2026 WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas just a month earlier, was still in.
At the time Negreanu busted, Will Givens — himself coming off a deep run in the 2026 WSOP Main Event — sat at or near the top of the leaderboard with 60 players remaining. Kornuth, having won the flip that sent Negreanu home, was above 100 big blinds.
That is a notably strong late-stage field for a Circuit event, which is itself a signal. When a Circuit Main Event pays CA$1.5 million for first, the equity is worth the travel for players who would normally only show up for a High Roller.
What This Means for Players
Three things are worth taking from this.
First, the called card is entertainment, not strategy. Kornuth won the pot because he had the better hand at the moment the money went in against a 14-big-blind stack, not because he asked nicely. Negreanu's shove with pocket tens over a three-bet at that stack depth is standard; so is Kornuth's call. Neither player made a mistake. The result was 87-13 in Negreanu's favour on the turn and it lost anyway. If a single river card can undo a correct decision, the only sane response is to keep making correct decisions and stop grading yourself on outcomes. Second, short-stack play decides these tournaments. Negreanu started the day with 14 big blinds and had already spun up before the fatal race. The Circuit ring — the cheapest piece of WSOP hardware there is — has simply refused to arrive.
