Hirotaka Fukatsu has won the 2026 APPT Korea Main Event at Paradise City in Incheon, turning a ninth-of-fourteen start on the final day into a career-best KRW 223,866,000 — roughly $160,788. The PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour event drew 782 entrants and built a prize pool of KRW 1.2 billion, about $895,160.
The scale of the jump is the story. Fukatsu's previous career best was $15,969 for fourth place in the APT Incheon Ultra Stack in August 2026 — one month earlier, and roughly one-tenth the size.
The final day
Day 3 began with 14 players. Hiroki Taniguchi busted in 10th to set the official final table, where five of the nine seats were occupied by Japanese players — part of a pattern that ran through the entire series.

Andrew Tomoya Matahira went first, shoving ace-king into Maxim Sorokin's pocket sevens and losing the flip. His $14,924 was the second-largest cash of his career.
The pivotal hand of the tournament came in eighth place. Soichiro Hayashi got his stack in with pocket aces; Fukatsu turned two pair holding king-queen and cracked them, vaulting from the middle of the pack to the chip lead. That is the hand that made everything afterwards possible — a reminder that tournament wins usually contain at least one moment that had nothing to do with skill.
Daijiro Fukuoka lost a flip to start-of-day chip leader Tony Mu, doubled several times to rebuild, then ran pocket tens into a Fukatsu straight to finish seventh. Chao Ting Cheng — a player with close to $1.3 million in career live earnings — made quads with king-eight for a brief reprieve before busting to Sorokin in sixth. Sorokin went out fifth to Mu, and Taisuke Niina fell fourth in a clash with Fukatsu.
Three-handed produced the day's biggest swing. Mu doubled up Xueying Zhao when her ace-jack rivered a flush against his ace-ten. Mu then four-bet jammed pocket aces into Zhao's pocket kings — and a king flopped. Mu, who had led at the start of the day, exited third for $71,710.
Heads-up, Fukatsu started close to 2:1 ahead, Zhao drew level almost immediately, and Fukatsu rebuilt. The final hand had Zhao all-in with queen-six against Fukatsu's king-ten. Zhao paired her queen, Fukatsu paired his ten, and a second ten on the turn made trips. The river bricked.
Zhao's $100,571 was also a career high — and her second runner-up finish of the series, which is a particularly tough way to have a great week.
Japanese players are running Korea
Five of nine at the final table, and the winner. PokerNews ran a companion piece during the series titled "Japanese Players are Dominating the APPT Korea Series," and the Main Event result confirmed it rather than reversing it.
There is a structural explanation. Japan has no legal domestic poker for real money, but it has a large, well-developed amateur scene built around free-play "amusement" poker bars, and a population of skilled players with nowhere at home to deploy that skill. Incheon is a short flight from Tokyo and Osaka. When a major tour stops in Korea, Japanese players travel in numbers that a domestic market would normally supply.
The consequence for the fields is that APPT Korea is not a soft destination stop. It is closer to a regional championship with a strong, motivated core — which makes Fukatsu's result, and Zhao's two runner-ups, more impressive than the buy-in alone suggests.
The value of a 782-entry field
A 782-entrant Main Event generating $895,160 puts APPT Korea firmly in the tier of significant regional championships. For comparison within the same tour, Minwoong Jeong beat 384 entrants to win the 2025 APPT Manila Championship for $202,981 — a smaller field with a larger top prize, reflecting a different buy-in level.

What this means for players
One hand can be the whole tournament. Fukatsu cracked aces with king-queen in eighth place and led from that moment on. You cannot plan for it, but you can put yourself in position for it — which in practice means surviving to the stage where big pots get played rather than gambling for chips early.
Regional championships are where career-best scores live. Fukatsu's previous high was $15,969. A single Main Event run took him past $160,000. If your live tournament volume is all $200-$500 events, your realistic ceiling is capped by structure, not ability. Occasionally playing a genuine championship — satellite in if the buy-in is a stretch — is how those ceilings move.
Chip leaders at the start of the final day win less often than you'd think. Tony Mu began Day 3 in front and finished third; Fukatsu began ninth of fourteen and won. Final-day chip counts are a snapshot, not a prediction. Understanding ICM is what turns a short stack into a live one.
