BetRivers Poker has launched a promotion that does something the US regulated market has talked about for years and rarely executed well: it uses sports betting volume to feed the poker room. The "Football to the Felt" offer, which ran from September 9 through September 14 following the conclusion of Monday Night Football, converted NFL Week 1 wagering into sit-and-go tickets for players in Delaware, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
It is a small promotion in absolute terms. It is a significant one strategically, and it is worth understanding why.
How the Offer Worked
Players earned up to $100 in SNG tickets based on the total amount of settled wagers they placed on NFL Week 1 markets. The conversion rate was roughly 25% โ a $100 settled wager returned $25 in tickets, regardless of whether the bet won or lost.
That last clause is the important one. The reward was tied to handle, not to results. A losing bettor and a winning bettor got the same ticket allocation for the same stake.
Players who qualified for a sportsbook reward could unlock an additional bundle of tickets by completing an "Extra Point" requirement: playing three SNGs at $1 or above within the promotional window.
The Season-Long Play
Week 1 was the hook. The larger programme is the "Football Freeroll of the Week," which runs across the season and carries more than $37,000 in combined freeroll and leaderboard prizes.
The mechanic inverts the Week 1 offer. Instead of sports betting feeding poker, poker activity feeds a sports-linked reward: players unlock a weekly prediction ticket by completing poker requirements โ 25 cash game hands, or three MTTs or SNGs at $1 or above. Correct predictions on the week's featured "Game of the Week" matchup earn entry into a freeroll guaranteeing between $1,000 and $5,000.
Together the two offers form a loop. Sportsbook activity generates poker tickets; poker activity generates sportsbook engagement; both generate a reason to open the app on a Sunday in autumn.
Why Operators Keep Trying This
The strategic logic behind sportsbook-to-poker crossover is straightforward and has been understood in the industry for a decade. Regulated US sportsbooks acquire customers at enormous scale and enormous cost. Online poker rooms in the same states acquire customers slowly and struggle to retain them.
If even a small percentage of a sportsbook's user base can be moved into the poker client, the acquisition cost for those poker players is effectively zero โ they are already registered, already deposited, already verified. That is a far better economic story than paying to acquire poker players directly, which is one reason poker has survived inside multi-product US operators when standalone poker rooms have not.
The execution has historically been poor. Most attempts amounted to a banner ad inside the sportsbook lobby, which converts approximately nobody. What BetRivers has done differently is make the reward automatic and proportional to activity the customer was going to undertake anyway. A bettor placing NFL Week 1 wagers does not have to change their behaviour to receive tickets โ they receive them, and then the question becomes whether they use them.
That is a meaningfully better funnel design. Whether it converts at scale is a separate question, and one the industry will be watching.
The Four-State Footprint
The promotion was live in Delaware, Michigan, Pennsylvania and West Virginia โ the states where BetRivers currently operates a combined online poker player pool. That pool is possible because of the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, which allows participating states to share liquidity rather than running isolated, sub-scale markets.
Shared liquidity is the single most important structural factor in US online poker, and it is why a promotion like this can offer meaningful SNG value at all. A sit-and-go ticket is only worth something if there are enough players to fill the game. In a siloed state market with a few hundred concurrent players, $25 in tickets might sit unused for hours. Across four combined states, they fill.

The NFL Calendar Is Poker's Best Acquisition Window
There is a reason this promotion launched in Week 1 rather than in March.
The NFL season is the single largest driver of sportsbook handle in the United States, and the September-to-February window is when regulated operators see their highest user engagement of the year. It is also, conveniently, the period when live poker attendance dips in many markets and online poker traffic softens after the summer WSOP surge.
Running a poker acquisition campaign off the back of NFL Week 1 therefore targets the maximum number of engaged users at the moment when the poker room most needs them. It is the sort of calendar awareness that separates operators who treat poker as a genuine product from those who treat it as a legacy vertical kept alive for brand reasons.
The broader pattern is worth watching. Several US operators have quietly rebuilt their poker offerings over the last two years โ adding mixed games, improving mobile clients, and expanding shared-liquidity pools โ after a period where the consensus was that regulated US online poker had no future. NFL-linked crossover promotions are one visible symptom of that renewed investment.
What This Means for Players
Handle-based rewards are strictly positive EV. A promotion that pays out on settled wagers regardless of outcome is, by definition, added value on bets you were placing anyway. The only way to lose money on it is to increase your betting volume in order to chase the reward โ which is exactly what the promotion is designed to encourage. The discipline here is simple: claim the value on your normal volume, do not manufacture volume to claim more value.
Tickets are not cash. $100 in SNG tickets is worth $100 only if you would otherwise have paid $100 to enter those sit-and-gos. If you are a losing SNG player, the tickets are worth your expected return from them, which is less. If you do not play SNGs at all, they are worth nothing. Be honest about which category you are in.
Freeroll equity is real but small. A $1,000-$5,000 freeroll spread across a large field is worth a few dollars in expectation to an average player. That is not a reason to skip it โ free equity is free equity โ but it is a reason not to complete a 25-hand cash game requirement you would not otherwise have played in order to enter.
Compare the underlying product, not the promotion. The worst reason to choose a poker room is a temporary offer. Rake structure, game quality, traffic at your preferred stakes and rakeback matter far more over a year than any single seasonal promotion. Our bonus guide and rakeback rankings cover how to evaluate the numbers that actually persist.
For players outside the regulated state pools, our sportsbook reviews cover the offshore books that run comparable crossover promotions, including BetOnline, SportsBetting.ag and TigerGaming โ all of which operate combined poker and sports products of their own.
