WPT & LAPC Reunite for 2027

By jason-murphyยทOctober 14, 2026ยท7 min read

The World Poker Tour and the Los Angeles Poker Classic (LAPC) are reuniting. A press release announced that the LAPC's $10,000 main event, held at the Commerce Casino & Hotel in Los Angeles, will rejoin the WPT in 2027 after six years as an independent, unaffiliated tournament. The timing is telling: the most recent LAPC main event drew just 50 entries, a figure Card Player columnist Mo Nuwwarah described as a sign the series has reached "critical levels."

This article looks at the history, the numbers, the reasons behind the reunion, and what it means for players and the live poker calendar.

What was announced

According to the press release and Card Player's coverage, the LAPC will be part of the WPT again in 2027, as the $10,000 WPT LAPC Championship. The Commerce Casino plans promotions, giveaways and satellites, with "hundreds of seats" to be awarded to the main event. The tournament was a WPT event until 2020 and then continued independently for six years.

The LAPC has long been one of the most storied events on the American calendar, held at the Commerce Casino in the Los Angeles area. Its prestige in the WPT's early television era helped build the tour's brand, and its return is symbolic as well as practical.

The numbers behind the decline

Card Player's opinion piece, published October 4, provides figures worth examining.

  • 2020 (the last WPT-affiliated year): the prize pool was $4,727,550.
  • The last five years combined (excluding 2021): $5,908,100 in prize money, about 25% more than the 2020 prize pool on its own.
  • Entries under the WPT: averaged 513 over the last five years with the tour.
  • Entries since the split: 634 across the five years since, though the source does not make clear whether that is a total or an average.
  • Latest edition: 50 entries, even though players could re-enter up to three times.

The comparison suggests that a typical WPT-branded LAPC drew roughly ten times the field of the most recent independent edition. Even if the 634 figure is a total, it points to a decline from the WPT years. In any event, a 50-entry field in a $10,000 event with re-entries is a thin crowd for a tournament that once attracted seven-figure first prizes.

Why the WPT brand matters

Nuwwarah's central argument is that the WPT brand drives player turnout. The events are functionally similar in structure and buy-in, but players place value on prestige, televised history, and the chance to win a WPT title. That brand value matters for professionals chasing leaderboard points and for amateurs who want a story to tell.

There is also a scheduling motive. This year, the WPT ran an event at the Venetian in Las Vegas at the same time as the LAPC, competing head-to-head. That clash probably hurt both events. By bringing the LAPC into the WPT calendar, the tour removes the conflict and gets a marquee California stop.

Finally, the WPT needs more North American events. The tour has enjoyed success in places such as Cambodia and Australia, but the author notes that this does not replace a strong presence in the United States. He also observes that a January WPT event at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood is missing from the current schedule, and that his sources suggest only one WPT stop there in the first half of the year. The LAPC adds a high-profile date.

The format challenge

The press release reportedly names a freezeout format, which is a harder sell today. Most large modern tournaments allow re-entry, which increases entries and prize pools, and gives players a second chance. Under a freezeout, one bust means you are out. The author notes that this year's LAPC allowed up to three re-entries, so the 50-entry field looks even weaker. A return to freezeout could discourage some recreational players, though it appeals to those who prefer a purer test of skill and a bigger share of the prize pool per entry.

Whatever format is used, the author argues that branding alone will not restore the LAPC's former glory, such as seven-figure first prizes. The press release suggests the organisers understand that.

The satellite strategy

The Commerce Casino has promised satellites and giveaways to fill the field. The author recommends running satellites often and starting early. He also suggests two ideas that go beyond conventional approaches:

  1. A steps-based system in ClubWPT Gold to qualify dozens of players, although the platform has recently faced regulatory problems.
  2. Cash-game promotions, similar to one he saw at MSPT Potawatomi, which offered promotional seats for playing a set number of cash-game hours.

His target is 200 qualified players, with a longer-term goal of exceeding the pre-COVID norm of about 500 players. A field of 200 qualifiers on top of direct buy-ins would produce a significantly larger prize pool than the 50 entries of 2026. Satellites are the engine for that. For players who like to qualify rather than buy in directly, our tournaments page and cash games guide explain how to find promotions, and our WSOP schedule page shows the calendar for the biggest live series.

What it means for players

More satellite opportunities. If the Commerce Casino follows through with "hundreds of seats," low-stakes players could have realistic chances at a $10,000 event. Watch the Commerce Casino and WPT announcements for the first satellites.

A more competitive field is likely. More entrants will bring stronger fields, particularly professionals chasing WPT points. If you qualify, expect real competition and prepare accordingly. Our poker strategy hub is a good place to start.

Freezeout means disciplined bankroll planning. If there is no re-entry, you must plan your buy-in and risk accordingly. See our bankroll management guide for how to set limits for high buy-in events.

Live poker stays relevant. The reunion shows that organisers believe brand and community still drive live attendance. For fans of live poker, it is a hopeful sign. Our online poker vs live poker comparison explains why many players value both.

The wider live poker context

Live poker in the United States has faced pressures: competing series, higher costs, and the growth of online formats. Several other recent stories reflect that environment, from regional series trying to boost fields with satellites to casinos exploring new formats. The WPT-LAPC reunion is one more attempt to consolidate brand and audience. If the Commerce Casino executes the satellite plan well, it could revive one of the oldest names in poker.

There are risks. Brand reunions do not guarantee success, and the LAPC must compete with other events for the same players. The 2027 calendar will also have to fit around the major series. Still, the move has a logic: a historic tournament with a weak recent field and a tour that wants a strong North American presence.

Bottom line

A 50-entry main event is a warning sign, and the LAPC's move back to the WPT is a reasonable response. The core questions for 2027 are whether the Commerce Casino can run enough satellites and promotions to hit its targets, and whether the freezeout format helps or hurts. For players, the best approach is to watch for qualification opportunities, plan your bankroll, and keep an eye on the schedule. If it works, the LAPC could once again be a must-play event on the live poker calendar.
