PokerStars is running the $215 WCOOP Women's World Championship today, September 20, with an unusual sweetener attached: the top three finishers each receive a free £300 entry into the Hippodrome Women's Classic in London next month.
It is a small detail on a large schedule, but it is a genuinely smart piece of design — and it points at something the industry has been slow to figure out about growing participation.
The event and the prize
The Women's World Championship is part of PokerStars' 2026 WCOOP, the 25th edition of the series, running September 6–30 with 121 numbered events and approximately $40 million in guarantees. At a $215 buy-in, the Women's Championship sits in the accessible band of the schedule.
The live component runs October 16–18 at London's Hippodrome Casino, as part of a Ladies Weekend built around a £20,000 guaranteed ladies-only tournament. The weekend also includes educational sessions and structured opportunities for players to meet and network.
Every entrant in the online championship is playing for two things: a WCOOP title, and a shot at a seat in the live event. The top three get the seat.
Why the online-to-live bridge matters
The standard approach to growing women's participation in poker has been to run more women's events. That helps, but it has a ceiling, because it addresses supply without addressing the specific friction that keeps players out.
For many players, the barrier to a first live tournament is not the buy-in. It is walking into an unfamiliar casino alone, not knowing the procedures, and expecting to be the only person at the table who looks like them. The 25th WCOOP has been a strong series. Benny Glaser claimed his 17th WCOOP title in the $1,050 8-Game — a record that looks increasingly untouchable in the mixed-game disciplines. Niklas Astedt won two WCOOP titles inside 24 hours. The series' six Main Events are split across September 27 and 28, with the No-Limit Hold'em Main on the 27th and the Pot-Limit Omaha Main on the 28th.
The $1.25 million guaranteed NLHE Main Event has satellite paths running from as low as $11, which remains one of the better value propositions on the online calendar.
Running the Women's Championship alongside that schedule, at a buy-in an order of magnitude below the Main Events, positions it as a genuine entry point rather than a token inclusion.
It is also worth noting where the live seat sits on the price ladder. A £300 entry into a £20,000 guaranteed event is a mid-range live tournament by London standards — meaningful enough to be worth winning, accessible enough that a player who enjoys the weekend could realistically buy in directly next year. That progression is the point. A prize that lands a first-time live player in an event permanently out of their range does nothing for retention; one that lands them in an event they could afford to repeat does.
The £20,000 guarantee itself is modest, and deliberately so. The Ladies Weekend is built around participation rather than prize money, with the educational and social programming running alongside the tournament rather than as an afterthought to it. Operators that have tried to grow women's participation purely through larger guarantees have generally found that the money attracts players who were already playing.
What this means for players
If you are considering your first live tournament, look for events with structure around them. A weekend that includes educational sessions and social programming alongside the tournament is materially easier to walk into than a standalone event.
