The 2026 WCOOP closes with an unusual finale: six Main Events clustered across September 27 and 28, carrying more than $6.5 million in combined guarantees. PokerStars has abandoned the single-championship model that defined the World Championship of Online Poker for most of its history, and replaced it with a tiered structure that lets a $109 player and a $10,300 player both claim a Main Event title in the same weekend.
It is the culmination of a series running September 6 to 30 — the 25th edition of WCOOP, featuring 121 numbered events across 350 individual tournaments and $40 million in total guarantees. Every one of those 350 tournaments awards a trophy, meaning the series will crown 350 champions before it closes.
The Main Event Structure
Three No-Limit Hold'em championships run simultaneously on September 27:
- Main Event Low — $109 buy-in, $1.25 million guaranteed
- Main Event Medium — $1,050 buy-in, $2 million guaranteed
- Main Event High — $10,300 buy-in, $2.5 million guaranteed
A parallel set of Pot-Limit Omaha Main Events follows, with the six championships together accounting for the $6.5 million figure. The events play out across the closing weekend of September 27 and 28.
The tiering logic runs through the entire series. Most WCOOP events are offered in Low, Medium and High versions, with the schedule spanning buy-ins from $5.50 up to a $25,000 Super High Roller and covering at least 18 poker variants — No-Limit Hold'em, PLO, PLO8, NLO8, HORSE, Razz, Badugi, Stud, 8-Game and both forms of 2-7 Lowball draw among them.
Why Tiering Beat the Single Championship
The old model was simple and increasingly broken. One Main Event, one buy-in, one champion. It produced clean marketing and a genuine championship narrative, and it excluded the overwhelming majority of the player base.
A $5,200 Main Event is inaccessible to a player with a $2,000 bankroll under any reasonable bankroll management framework. Satellites narrowed that gap but never closed it — a player who satellites into an event that represents 250% of their roll is not managing risk, they are gambling with extra steps.
Tiering solves this without diluting the top. The $10,300 High retains the prestige and the professional field. The $109 Low gives a recreational player a genuine shot at a Main Event title and a five-figure or better score for a buy-in they can actually afford. Neither cannibalises the other, because the populations barely overlap.
There is a cost. Six Main Events means the phrase "WCOOP Main Event Champion" now describes six people per format rather than one, which inevitably dilutes the title. PokerStars appears to have decided that six engaged tiers beat one prestigious one, and on the evidence of participation across the tiered events this year, that is probably right.
The Competitive Context
WCOOP is not running in a vacuum. The 2026 WSOP Online on GGPoker overlaps almost exactly, running August 16 through September 29 with 33 bracelets, more than $69 million in guarantees, and a $5,000 Main Event carrying a $25 million guarantee. The GGPoker series also includes a $250 Mystery Millions on September 7 with $10 million guaranteed and a $400 Colossus on September 14 with $5 million guaranteed.
The direct comparison is unflattering for WCOOP on raw numbers. GGPoker's Main Event guarantee alone is nearly four times WCOOP's combined six-championship figure. GGPoker's traffic advantage is the reason — its 30-day cash game player average of 9,726 exceeds the next four networks combined, including CoinPoker at 2,032, PokerStars at 1,926, iPoker at 1,074 and Winamax at 1,014.
What WCOOP offers instead is variance in format rather than volume in dollars. Eighteen poker variants across 350 tournaments is a genuinely different product from a Hold'em-and-PLO-heavy bracelet series. For mixed-game players, WCOOP remains the best month of the year, and there is no real substitute.
What This Means for Players
Pick your tier by bankroll, not ambition. The most common error in a tiered series is playing above your roll because the higher tier has the bigger number attached. A player with a $3,000 bankroll should be playing the $109 Low, not satelliting into the $1,050 Medium. The title is identical. The variance is not.
Register for the Low tier early. Low-tier Main Events attract enormous fields and run for a very long time. A $109 event with a $1.25 million guarantee could draw well over 10,000 entries. Clear your schedule properly rather than starting a tournament you cannot finish.
Mixed games are where the soft spots are. The Hold'em fields in a major online series are thoroughly picked over. The Badugi, Razz and 2-7 fields are not. A player with even modest competence in a non-Hold'em variant faces dramatically weaker opposition. Every tournament awards a trophy. With 350 champions to be crowned, the marginal value of a deep run in a smaller-field side event is higher than usual. If you are collecting hardware rather than maximising EV, the obscure variants are the efficient path.
Satellite into the tier above your comfort level, not two above. The tiered structure makes satellites unusually efficient here, because the step between Low and Medium is roughly ten times rather than fifty times. A player who regularly plays $109 events can reasonably satellite into the $1,050 Medium and treat it as a stretch shot. Satelliting from $109 into the $10,300 High is not a stretch shot, it is a lottery ticket dressed up as strategy — and the field waiting there is composed almost entirely of professionals who play that buy-in every week. Do not spread yourself across both series. WCOOP and WSOP Online overlap for most of September. Playing both means splitting attention, bankroll and rest across two grinds. Twenty-Five Years In
WCOOP launched in 2002 as the first genuine online poker championship series, and its survival to a 25th edition through the UIGEA, Black Friday, the mass regulatory fragmentation of the 2010s, and GGPoker's rise is a real achievement. The series that once defined online poker no longer leads it on volume. It still leads on breadth, and for a large segment of the player base, breadth is the point.
