Stake Poker has announced the Stake Showdown, a $1,000 buy-in tournament with $125,000 guaranteed running Sunday, September 27 on its international platform. It is the biggest event the crypto-native room has put on its schedule.
For a poker product that only launched in 2024 and still sits alongside a much larger casino and sportsbook operation, a four-figure buy-in with a six-figure guarantee is a statement of intent.
The Event
The Showdown carries re-entry during the early levels, which is standard for a tournament of this size and materially affects how the guarantee gets met โ re-entry fields routinely deliver 30โ50% more entries than the unique player count.
Satellites are already running daily until the event, with an unusually long ladder:
- $0.50 โ entry-level step
- $10 โ mid step
- $100 โ final step to a $1,000 seat
That $0.50 bottom rung is aggressive. It means a player can theoretically parlay a fifty-cent buy-in into a $1,000 seat across three successful satellites โ a 2,000x conversion. In practice the odds of running the full ladder are long, but the ladder structure is what makes a $1,000 event accessible to a player pool that mostly plays micro stakes.
The precedent is Stake's August Madness, which guaranteed $80,000 off an $8 buy-in. The Showdown moves in the opposite direction: far higher buy-in, moderately higher guarantee. That is a deliberate positioning shift, aiming at serious tournament players rather than volume-driven recreational fields.
Our tournaments hub covers how satellite ladders work across the major rooms, and bankroll management explains why satellite equity should be valued at the seat price rather than the buy-in you paid.
Who Stake Actually Is
Stake launched as an iGaming platform in 2017 and broke into the mainstream around 2022 through aggressive marketing, high-profile brand ambassadors and heavy investment in the streaming platform Kick.com. For most of its existence it has been known for casino and sports betting rather than poker.
Stake Poker launched in 2024, built in-house and run inside the casino product. It is browser-based, takes crypto deposits and withdrawals, and includes the features experienced players expect โ Run It Twice, Rabbit Hunt and a four-colour deck among them.
Poker remains secondary to Stake's other verticals, which is the central strategic fact about the room. Its poker traffic does not have to justify itself on rake alone; it exists partly to keep customers inside an ecosystem where they also bet sports and play casino games. That cross-subsidy is why a room of Stake's poker size can afford a $125,000 guarantee.
The same logic explains why crypto-native rooms have been able to run promotions that pure-play poker operators cannot. Our crypto poker guide covers the current landscape, and Bitcoin poker explains the deposit and withdrawal mechanics for players new to the category.
The Crypto Poker Competitive Picture
Stake is not operating in an empty field. The crypto poker segment has become genuinely competitive over the past two years, and it is one of the few parts of online poker growing rather than flat.
CoinPoker has been pushing product innovation, recently launching its K-Poker fast cash format. BC Poker runs a provably fair model under an Anjouan licence. WPT Global takes crypto alongside fiat and has been aggressively building its Asian schedule. Traditional offshore networks serving US players โ the Chico Network and the Winning Poker Network among them โ have leaned heavily into crypto rails as banking friction with card processors increased.
What distinguishes Stake is scale outside poker. CoinPoker and BC Poker are poker-first businesses. Stake is a gambling conglomerate that added poker. Both models have advantages: the poker-first rooms tend to build better poker-specific features and treat their regulars more carefully; the conglomerates can outspend on guarantees and marketing.
For players, the practical question is liquidity โ which room actually has games running at your stake at your hour. Our BC Poker review covers one of the more interesting poker-first alternatives, and safe poker sites sets out the due-diligence checklist that matters more in this segment than any other.
What a $125,000 Guarantee Actually Signals
Guarantees are marketing, but they are also a wager by the operator. To meet $125,000 at a $1,000 buy-in, Stake needs roughly 139 entries after typical tournament fees. If it falls short, the room covers the difference โ an overlay that goes straight to the players in the field.
That makes announced guarantees on newer or smaller platforms genuinely interesting to value-conscious players. Overlay is the purest form of positive expected value available in poker: free money added to a prize pool with no corresponding increase in the field.
Whether the Showdown overlays depends on how the satellite ladder performs over the next two weeks. A long ladder starting at $0.50 can feed a surprising number of seats, and satellite winners who would never buy in directly are exactly the players a $1,000 field wants.
What This Means for Players
Satellite into events you would not buy into directly. This is the core practical takeaway. A $0.50 entry into a ladder that ends at a $1,000 seat is the cheapest possible exposure to a $125,000 prize pool. Even a low success rate produces good expected value if you treat each satellite as a standalone tournament and play it correctly โ which means playing for the seat, not for the chip lead. Satellite strategy is fundamentally different from regular MTT strategy, and our ICM guide explains why survival dominates accumulation near the bubble.
Watch for overlay on new platforms. Guarantees at rooms still building their tournament reputation are where overlays live. Checking registered entries against the guarantee shortly before late registration closes is a five-minute habit that occasionally pays very well.
Crypto rooms require more diligence, not less. Faster withdrawals and larger promotions come with a different regulatory profile. Verify licensing, check withdrawal history from real players, and do not keep a balance larger than you would be comfortable losing to an operational problem.
Re-entry changes the maths. In a re-entry event, the field is deeper and softer than the unique-player count suggests, but your effective buy-in is whatever you are willing to spend, not the advertised price. Decide your maximum before you register.
