The PokerStars Open rolled into Casino Barcelona this week for a €1,650 Main Event running August 16–22, the latest stop on a 2026 season that stretches from late January to early December and takes in ten cities across Europe and the United States.
It is the quieter half of PokerStars' live poker operation, and arguably the more important one.
The 2026 Season Map
The PokerStars Open season runs January 23 to December 7, 2026, with stops in Campione, Paris, Philadelphia, Dublin, Monte Carlo, Namur, Málaga, Barcelona, Aix-en-Provence and Prague.
The opening stop set the tone. Elvir Nuhiu took down the Campione Main Event at the Casinò di Campione in early February for €200,640 — a top prize north of €200,000 from a buy-in in the €1,000–€1,700 range, which is the entire value proposition of the tour compressed into a single result.
Barcelona arrives at the height of the European summer poker calendar, in a city that has become the continent's most reliable draw for live tournament volume. Casino Barcelona in August is one of the few venues on earth where a poker tour can be reasonably confident of a large field without heroic marketing spend.
Why the Open Exists
PokerStars runs a tiered live poker structure, and understanding the tiers explains why the Open matters.
At the top sits the European Poker Tour, with €5,300 Main Events, Super High Rollers running into six figures, and fields stacked with the best tournament players in the world. The EPT is the prestige product — the one that generates the headlines, the streams and the brand halo. This year's EPT Barcelona delivered exactly that.
Beneath it, the PokerStars Open occupies the mid-buy-in tier: Main Events priced between roughly €1,000 and €1,700, with side event schedules built for players who want a week of poker without a five-figure budget.
The logic is straightforward. The addressable market for a €5,300 tournament is small. The addressable market for a €1,650 tournament with a strong side schedule is many multiples larger, and those players are the same ones playing online year-round, buying satellites, and generating the volume that actually sustains an online poker business.
The Open is not a lesser EPT. It is the tier where most players in the ecosystem actually live.
The Buy-In Tier That Grew
The past few years have seen the mid-buy-in live tour become the most competitive category in poker. Every major operator now fields one.

The most efficient way into a PokerStars Open Main Event is not to buy in directly. It is to satellite.
Online satellites into live packages are one of the few mechanisms in poker that let a player enter an event well above their normal bankroll ceiling without breaking their own rules. Field softness. Live tournament fields at the mid-buy-in tier are, on average, substantially weaker than online fields of comparable buy-in. Online players benefit from years of solver study, tracking data and volume; the average live recreational player at a €1,650 event has none of those. Slower structures. Live tournaments play far deeper in terms of big blinds relative to level length, which rewards post-flop skill more heavily than turbo-structured online events. Players whose strength is reading opponents and playing deep-stacked pots find live structures far more forgiving.

Three pieces of practical advice:
Budget for the trip, not the buy-in. Flights, accommodation and a week of expenses in a city like Barcelona routinely exceed the Main Event buy-in itself. A €1,650 tournament can easily become a €4,000 trip. Players who budget only the buy-in end up playing scared or re-entering money they cannot afford.
Use the side events. A single Main Event entry is a poor use of a week abroad. The side schedules at Open stops carry lower buy-ins and softer fields, and they are where a lot of the actual profit sits for a competent player.
Prepare for the structure. If your entire experience is online turbos, walking into a deep-stacked live Main Event with 40-minute levels is a genuine adjustment.
