PokerStars Turns 25: A 9/11 Launch

By jason-murphyยทSeptember 15, 2026ยท6 min read

PokerStars is 25 years old. For a company that has spent much of 2026 marking the anniversary โ€” promotions, retrospectives, and now the 25th edition of the World Championship of Online Poker โ€” the most striking detail in its history is one it has never had much cause to celebrate.

PokerStars launched real-money play on September 11, 2001.

The Worst Possible Launch Day

It is difficult to imagine a less auspicious moment to open a gambling business to the public. A company that had been running play-money games since September 2000 flipped the switch on real-money tables on the morning of the deadliest terrorist attack in American history. Whatever marketing plan existed became irrelevant within hours.

There is no version of this story in which the timing was anything other than catastrophic luck. It is worth recording precisely because so much of poker's modern history gets told as a sequence of shrewd decisions, and this one was simply the roll of a die that a private company had no way of foreseeing.

What followed is well documented. The site grew steadily through 2002 and 2003, then exploded after Chris Moneymaker โ€” who qualified through a PokerStars satellite โ€” won the 2003 WSOP Main Event. That single result did more for online poker than any marketing budget could have, and it happened to attach itself to the operator whose satellite Moneymaker had played.

What the Company Became

Twenty-five years on, PokerStars is a very different animal. It is part of Flutter Entertainment, the world's largest listed gambling company. Its US operations run under the FanDuel brand following the closure of PokerStars US on April 1, 2026, and the relaunch as "PokerStars Exclusively on FanDuel" across New Jersey, Michigan and Pennsylvania with one shared player pool.

Flutter has spent 2026 consolidating its poker assets onto the PokerStars Network, migrating Betfair Poker players onto PokerStars infrastructure and shifting the network toward a business-to-business model. The direction of travel is clear: fewer distinct brands, more shared liquidity, one technology stack.

That consolidation is rational and probably necessary. It is also a long way from the sprawling, competitive online poker market of the mid-2000s, when a dozen credible networks competed for the same players and the resulting bonus wars were the best deal players have ever had.

The Traffic Reality

The commercial picture for PokerStars in 2026 is more complicated than a 25th anniversary press cycle suggests.

Cash game traffic tells the story most directly. GGPoker now averages roughly 9,726 cash game players on a 30-day basis โ€” more than the next four networks combined, with CoinPoker at around 2,032, PokerStars at around 1,926, iPoker at 1,074 and Winamax at 1,014. PokerStars' cash-game traffic has slid from approximately 4,500 players in late 2022 to roughly 2,000 by mid-2025.

The recent trend is less bleak than the headline: 90-day figures show PokerStars up 3.4 percent, alongside GGPoker up 3.9 percent, CoinPoker up 8.1 percent and BetRivers up 4.4 percent. The market is redistributing rather than collapsing. But redistribution has not been kind to the incumbent.

Tournament series remain PokerStars' strongest suit. WCOOP's 25th edition carries $40 million in guarantees across 350 events, and the Sunday Million's 20th anniversary edition drew the sort of field that few operators could assemble. Big-field tournament poker is a business built on brand trust accumulated over decades, and that is precisely the asset PokerStars still holds.

What Changed for Players

The most consequential shift over 25 years has not been technological. It has been economic.

Early online poker was extraordinarily profitable for competent players because the field was full of people learning the game in public with no study resources available. Rake was often lower, rakeback deals were routinely generous, and the skill gap between an average winning player and an average losing player was enormous.

Solvers changed that permanently. The availability of near-optimal solutions to most common spots compressed the skill distribution at every level, and rake structures tightened as operators optimised revenue. The result is a game where the theoretical edges are smaller and the practical edges depend more on game selection, rakeback value and volume than on raw skill advantage.

That is not a decline โ€” it is maturity, and it is what happens to every game that gets studied seriously. But it means a player starting today faces a different economic proposition than one starting in 2004, and the advice that worked then does not transfer cleanly. Our poker strategy hub and the guide to what rakeback is cover what actually moves the needle now.

The Competitive Landscape at 25

PokerStars no longer defines the market the way it did for a decade. GGPoker dominates on traffic. CoinPoker has grown rapidly on a crypto-native model. The Chico Network and the Winning Poker Network serve the large population of players in unregulated US states, with rooms including Americas Cardroom, BetOnline and TigerGaming carrying meaningful volume. Our Chico versus WPN comparison covers the differences for players choosing between them.

What PokerStars retains is scale in the one format where scale matters most โ€” large-field tournaments โ€” plus a regulatory footprint and a brand that carries weight with recreational players in a way no competitor has matched.

What This Means for Players

If you play tournaments, PokerStars remains among the best options for large guarantees and deep structures, particularly during series like WCOOP. The satellite ecosystem is the most developed in the industry.

If you play cash games, the traffic numbers matter. Fewer players means fewer tables, worse game selection and longer waits at higher stakes. Check the lobby at the hours you actually play before committing a bankroll, and compare against alternatives on our real money poker and cash games pages.

If you are choosing a first site, brand longevity is a genuine signal. Twenty-five years of continuous operation through multiple regulatory upheavals is meaningful evidence of stability โ€” which is not the same as being the best value. Our safe poker sites guide explains what to actually verify, and beginner poker sites covers the options that suit new players best.

The Anniversary Worth Noting

Most corporate anniversaries are marketing exercises. This one is a reminder that an industry now worth billions began with a small Costa Rica-registered company flipping on real-money play on a morning when nobody was going to notice.

Twenty-five years later, the game is bigger, harder, more regulated, and far less profitable for the average player than it was in 2004. PokerStars is a smaller force in a larger market. Both of those things can be true at once, and both are consequences of the same thing: poker grew up.
