NFL Betting Set for Record $32.3B Fall

By jason-murphyยทSeptember 4, 2026ยท7 min read

Legal US sportsbooks are projected to handle a record $32.3 billion on the NFL this season, but the more significant number is the one alongside it: prediction markets are forecast to trade $36.8 billion on NFL outcomes, more than double last season's volume. For the first time, the parallel market is expected to exceed the regulated sportsbook market on the country's biggest betting sport.

That crossover is the story of the 2026 season, and it has implications well beyond football.

Growth, But Slowing

The $32.3 billion sportsbook figure is a record, and it is also the smallest year-over-year growth rate since the Supreme Court cleared the way for nationwide sports betting in 2018. Both facts are true simultaneously, and reconciling them explains most of what is happening in the American gambling market.

The explosive growth of the past several years came primarily from geographic expansion. Each new state that legalised online sports betting added a population that had not previously been able to bet legally, and handle grew accordingly. Sports betting is now legal in 39 states plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, with 30 states offering legal online betting through licensed apps.

That leaves a shrinking pool of expansion candidates. The states without any legal sports betting are Alabama, Alaska, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and Utah โ€” a list that includes the two largest states in the country. California and Texas together represent roughly a fifth of the US population, and both have shown no near-term appetite for legalisation.

Without those two, geographic growth is largely exhausted. Missouri, which launched on 1 December 2025 as the 39th state, was one of the last meaningful additions available. Future growth has to come from getting more money out of existing customers, which is a fundamentally harder problem and one that tends to attract regulatory attention.

The Prediction Market Surge

While sportsbook growth decelerates, prediction markets are on track to roughly double. $36.8 billion in NFL volume would make them the largest single venue for football wagering in the United States.

The distinction between a prediction market and a sportsbook is legally significant and, from the customer's perspective, increasingly thin. A prediction market lets participants trade contracts on the outcome of events, with the contract settling at a fixed value depending on what happens. Buying a contract at 40 cents that settles at $1 if a team wins is economically similar to taking odds on that team. The regulatory treatment, however, has been entirely different โ€” prediction markets have operated under federal commodities regulation rather than state gambling law.

That asymmetry is the entire basis of the growth. A prediction market operating under a federal framework can serve customers in California and Texas, where sportsbooks cannot. It faces different tax treatment, different marketing restrictions and different licensing costs. For an operator, the advantages are substantial.

State regulators have noticed. Multiple states have moved against prediction market operators over the past year, and the litigation is ongoing. The outcome will determine whether the parallel market is a durable structure or a regulatory arbitrage window that closes.

Why Poker Players Should Care

The connection is not obvious at first, but it is real.

Shared operator economics. Many of the operators serving offshore poker players also run sportsbooks, and the two products cross-subsidise each other. A room whose sportsbook is generating strong volume can afford better poker promotions, larger guarantees and more aggressive rakeback. Our reviews of the BetOnline sportsbook, SportsBetting.ag and the TigerGaming sportsbook cover operators running both sides.

Shared regulatory fate. The legal fights over prediction markets are, at bottom, arguments about what constitutes gambling and who has jurisdiction over it. Those arguments have implications for online poker, which has spent two decades in various states of legal ambiguity in the United States. A ruling that expands federal authority over event-based wagering could affect the poker conversation in either direction.

Skill-game framing. Poker's legal case in the US has always rested partly on the argument that it is a game of skill rather than chance. Prediction markets make a structurally similar argument โ€” that trading on outcomes is investment activity rather than gambling. Courts evaluating one framework will inevitably be influenced by how they have treated the other.

Player overlap. The audiences are not identical, but they are adjacent. Both attract people comfortable with probability, expected value and variance. A sports bettor who has internalised implied probability and vig is already most of the way to understanding pot odds, and the conceptual transfer runs in both directions.

What This Means for Players

Football season changes online game quality. From September through January, a meaningful share of the recreational gambling audience redirects attention to the NFL. This has measurable effects on poker traffic, particularly on Sunday afternoons and Monday nights in the US-facing rooms. Games during football broadcast windows tend to be either notably softer โ€” players are distracted โ€” or notably thinner, depending on the room. It is worth tracking which applies where you play.

Bankroll separation matters. Players who run poker and sports betting out of the same account balance consistently underperform players who separate them. The two activities have completely different variance profiles and completely different edges, and blending them makes it impossible to tell which is actually profitable. Our bankroll management guide covers the principle; the application to a combined sportsbook-and-poker account is to keep separate mental โ€” and ideally separate actual โ€” balances.

Understand the products you are using. If you are trading event contracts on a prediction market, you are not doing the same thing as placing a bet with a sportsbook, and the differences matter for taxes, for consumer protections and for what recourse you have if something goes wrong. The regulatory picture is genuinely unsettled and worth following.

Promotional value peaks in September. Operators front-load their marketing spend around the NFL season opener. For players who use both products, this is the highest-value window of the year for signup and reload offers. Our bonus guide covers how to evaluate them, and the sportsbooks hub covers the current options.

The Structural Shift

The projection that prediction markets will trade more NFL volume than sportsbooks handle would have seemed implausible two years ago. It reflects two things happening at once: regulated sports betting reaching the natural limits of its geographic footprint, and a parallel channel with fewer constraints scaling rapidly into the gap.

Whether that persists depends almost entirely on litigation. If courts uphold the federal framework, prediction markets become a permanent feature of the American gambling landscape and the state-by-state licensing model looks increasingly obsolete. If states prevail, the volume will substantially disappear or migrate back to licensed books.

Either way, the era in which US gambling growth came automatically from adding states has ended. What replaces it is being decided in courtrooms rather than legislatures โ€” a shift that anyone with an interest in the eventual legal status of online poker in America should be watching closely. Our US poker hub tracks where the regulated game currently stands, and the safe poker sites guide covers the practicalities for players in states that have not legalised.
