NFL 2026: Rams Lead Wide-Open Field

By jason-murphyยทAugust 18, 2026ยท6 min read

The 2026 NFL season opens with the Los Angeles Rams as Super Bowl LXI favourites, but the more interesting number is how crowded the field behind them has become. Fourteen teams currently sit at 20/1 or shorter to win the Super Bowl โ€” compared with only five at the same point last year. By the standard market measure, this is the most wide-open NFL season in years.

For anyone betting futures, that distinction matters more than which team sits at the top.

The Board

The Rams lead the market at +500 at FanDuel and +600 at DraftKings, having added edge rusher Myles Garrett to a roster that was already a contender. The gap between books is itself notable โ€” a full point of implied probability difference on the market favourite suggests genuine disagreement about how much Garrett moves the needle.

Behind them, the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens are both listed at +1000. Defending champion Seattle opens at +1100, with the books pricing in another deep run despite the historical difficulty of repeating. The Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs are bunched at +1600.

The full group of 14 teams at 20/1 or better: Rams, Ravens, Bills, Seahawks, Chiefs, Eagles, Patriots, Chargers, Packers, Texans, Lions, 49ers, Broncos and Bengals.

Why the Field Is So Compressed

The clearest structural explanation is coaching turnover. The 2026 season begins with 10 new head coaches, 21 new offensive coordinators and 16 new defensive coordinators. That is an extraordinary amount of scheme change across the league in a single offseason.

Coaching turnover creates uncertainty in both directions. Teams that underperformed last season may improve sharply under new direction; teams that overperformed may regress when continuity breaks. Sportsbooks price uncertainty by compressing the odds โ€” when the range of plausible outcomes widens, the distance between the favourite and the field narrows.

That compression is what produces a board with 14 teams at 20/1 or shorter. It is not that the league has 14 genuine contenders in any meaningful sense; it is that the books cannot confidently separate them yet.

Reading Futures Markets Properly

Futures betting is where casual bettors most consistently lose value, and the reason is straightforward: the hold is enormous.

If you convert the entire Super Bowl futures board into implied probabilities and sum them, the total will exceed 100% by a wide margin โ€” typically 20-40% for a full 32-team market, depending on the book. That overround is the sportsbook's built-in margin, and it is far higher than the roughly 4-5% you face on a standard point spread bet.

This has a direct practical consequence. A futures bet needs a much larger edge to be profitable than a single-game bet does. Betting the Rams at +500 requires you to believe their true probability of winning the Super Bowl is meaningfully above 16.7%. Given that no team has genuinely exceeded 25% preseason Super Bowl probability in the modern era, the room for edge is narrow.

The other consideration is capital lock-up. A futures bet placed in August does not resolve until February. That is six months of dead money, and the opportunity cost is real if you are actively betting the weekly card.

Where the Value Usually Sits

The general principle in a compressed market is that value migrates away from the favourites. When the top of the board is tightly bunched, the books have priced the obvious contenders efficiently โ€” that is where the money goes and where the lines are sharpest.

The mid-tier and long shots are priced less precisely, partly because they attract less action and partly because they carry more variance. A team at 40/1 with a plausible path โ€” a new coordinator, a healthy quarterback returning, a soft schedule โ€” is where a genuine mispricing is more likely to survive.

The other approach worth considering is division and conference futures rather than outright Super Bowl. Conference winner markets carry lower hold than Super Bowl markets, and division markets lower still. If your read is that a particular team is undervalued, expressing it through a division future often gives you better pricing on the same underlying opinion.

Line shopping matters enormously here. The Rams at +500 versus +600 is a 20% difference in payout on the same bet. Anyone betting futures seriously should hold accounts at multiple books. Our sportsbooks hub compares the current options, and reviews of BetOnline Sportsbook, SportsBetting.ag and TigerGaming Sportsbook cover the specifics of each.

The Poker Crossover

For poker players, NFL futures markets are an unusually natural fit, because the underlying skill is the same one poker rewards: converting a probabilistic read into a bet size, and only acting when the price exceeds your estimate of true probability.

The parallel to pot odds is exact. A +500 line is offering you 5-to-1, which means you need better than a 16.7% chance of winning for the bet to be profitable โ€” the same calculation as deciding whether to call a river bet. The difference is that in poker you are also modelling an opponent's range, while in a futures market you are modelling a season.

The bankroll principle transfers as well. Futures bets are high-variance, low-frequency propositions with long resolution times. Treating them as a small, capped percentage of a betting bankroll is the same discipline that bankroll management demands in poker, and for the same reason: the mathematics of ruin do not care which game you are playing.

Many players run both activities through a single account. BetOnline and SportsBetting.ag both operate integrated poker rooms and sportsbooks, meaning a single deposit covers both, and TigerGaming does the same. That convenience is genuine, though it is worth being deliberate about keeping the bankrolls mentally separate โ€” poker money and betting money serve different purposes and should be sized independently.

What to Watch Before Week 1

Preseason results are close to meaningless for predicting regular season performance, but two things that emerge during preseason do matter: injuries and depth chart clarity. A significant injury to a starting quarterback moves a Super Bowl future more than any other single event, and the books adjust fast.

If you intend to bet futures, the choice is between betting early โ€” accepting more uncertainty in exchange for better prices before the market sharpens โ€” or waiting until roles are settled and paying the tighter number. In a season this compressed, with this much coaching turnover, there is a reasonable argument for waiting. The uncertainty that is currently compressing the board will resolve over the first four to six weeks, and the teams that separate themselves will still be available at prices that reflect a partially-run season rather than a fully-priced one.

Either way, the discipline is the same as at the poker table: bet when the price is wrong, not when the story is good.
