GGPoker's cash game traffic now exceeds the next four networks combined. August 2026 figures put GGPoker at a 9,726-player 30-day average, against CoinPoker at 2,032 and PokerStars at 1,926, with iPoker and Winamax filling out the top five. Add those four together and GGPoker still leads.
That is not a narrow lead in a competitive market. That is one operator having restructured the global online poker landscape around itself, and the reasons why are worth understanding โ because they determine where the good games are.
How GGPoker Got Here
Three deliberate choices, all of which cut against conventional poker-operator wisdom.
The HUD ban. GGPoker prohibits heads-up displays and third-party tracking software. This was controversial when introduced and remains so among serious players, who lose a genuine analytical tool. But it works exactly as intended: it discourages the hyper-technical regulars whose edge depends on data accumulation, and it makes the tables less intimidating for recreational players who know they are being profiled. The result is a pool that skews far more recreational than a comparable HUD-permitted site.
Casino and sportsbook cross-sell. GGPoker's player pool draws heavily from customers who arrived for other products. Someone who came for sports betting and wandered into a poker table is a fundamentally different customer from someone who downloaded a poker client on purpose. Volume from that source is enormous, and it is not competing on the same terms as poker-first operators.
Aggressive tournament positioning. The WSOP relationship gives GGPoker something no competitor can replicate โ bracelets, the most recognisable brand in poker, and a reason for recreational players to open an account. The current WSOP Online series awards 33 bracelets across a six-week run, and events on that scale pull traffic into cash games as a side effect.
Where PokerStars Actually Stands
The traffic numbers understate PokerStars' position, and it is important to be precise about why.
PokerStars retains the deepest high-stakes liquidity in online poker. It runs the largest high-stakes cash pool outside private games, with tables consistently running at NL2000 and above around the clock. GGPoker's advantage is at the recreational end of the stakes ladder; PokerStars' is at the top.
For a player grinding NL50, GGPoker's pool is straightforwardly better โ more tables, more games, softer opponents. For a player at NL2000, PokerStars may be the only site where the games reliably run at all. These are different products serving different customers, and a single traffic number obscures that.
PokerStars is also in the middle of consolidating Flutter's other poker brands onto its network, which will add liquidity over the coming months. That will not close a five-to-one gap, but it changes the trajectory.
The CoinPoker Surprise
The most interesting number in the August data is CoinPoker at 2,032 โ ahead of PokerStars, and a result that would have been implausible three years ago.
CoinPoker is a crypto-native operator, and its rise reflects a genuine structural shift. Players who prioritise fast, low-friction deposits and withdrawals over brand recognition have migrated toward operators built around cryptocurrency from the ground up rather than sites that bolted crypto on as one payment option among many. The difference in withdrawal speed is substantial, and for a player moving money frequently, that compounds.
Our crypto poker guide covers the category, bitcoin poker explains the mechanics, and BC Poker is worth a look for players interested in the provably fair, crypto-first end of the market.
What This Means for Players
Traffic is a means, not an end. The number that matters is not a network's total player count but how many tables are running at your stakes, in your preferred format, at the hours you play. A site with 10,000 players concentrated in micro-stakes Hold'em is useless to a mid-stakes Omaha player. Check the lobby at your actual playing time before committing a bankroll.
Soft pools are worth more than good software. A five percent worse interface on a site where the games are meaningfully softer is an easy trade. Players routinely over-weight client quality and under-weight opponent quality, and the second variable determines your win rate almost entirely.
Liquidity determines format availability. Mixed games, PLO variants, short-deck and other non-Hold'em formats need substantial pools to run at all. If you play Omaha or anything outside standard Hold'em, network size stops being a preference and becomes a hard constraint. Our holdem vs omaha comparison covers where the games actually run.
US players face a different market entirely. None of the above applies directly if you are in the United States, where the major international networks are unavailable and the relevant comparison is between US-facing operators. Our US poker guide covers that market, with reviews of Americas Cardroom, BetOnline, TigerGaming and Black Chip Poker, and the chico network vs wpn comparison covers the two networks that matter most there.
The Concentration Risk
There is a legitimate concern buried in these numbers. An industry where one operator holds a dominant share of cash traffic has less competitive pressure on the variables that matter to players: rake, rakeback, promotional generosity and software investment.
Rake has drifted upward at most sites through 2026, to the point where games like $2/$4 that were profitable in 2024 may be closer to breakeven now. Rakeback structures have tightened, with flat rakeback arrangements giving way to tiered VIP programmes that concentrate rewards among the highest-volume players. Effective rake is now highly player-dependent in a way it was not five years ago.
That said, the picture is not uniformly bleak. Rake structures at the better operators have come down from the punitive levels some sites trialled in the 2019-21 period, and some operators have kept rake flat entirely. The variation between sites is wide enough that it is worth actively comparing rather than assuming. Our rakeback guide and what is rakeback explainer cover how to calculate what you are actually paying.
For a player putting serious volume through a site, the difference between a good and bad rake deal can exceed the difference between a good and bad win rate. It is the most under-analysed variable in most players' site selection.
Historical Perspective
Online poker has had a dominant operator before. PokerStars held a comparable share after Full Tilt's collapse in 2011, and held it for the better part of a decade. That period produced both the strongest tournament infrastructure the game has ever had and a series of rake and rewards changes that players broadly disliked and had limited power to resist.
The lesson is that dominance is neither purely good nor purely bad for players โ it funds investment while removing competitive discipline. GGPoker's current position is likely to produce the same mix: more ambitious series and bigger guarantees, alongside terms that trend gradually in the operator's favour.
What changed the last cycle was not player pressure but the emergence of credible alternatives. CoinPoker's presence in the top three is evidence that the market can still generate them.
The Practical Conclusion
Play where the games are best for you specifically, which is a narrower question than which network is biggest. Check your stakes, your format and your hours. Compare rake and rakeback properly. And do not assume that the largest pool is the most profitable one for your particular game โ at the top of the stakes ladder it demonstrably is not.
